Beginners Course

Who would enjoy this course?

Our complete beginners course is designed to suit anyone who hasn’t picked up a paint brush since school.   If you didn’t even do that, don’t worry – we even teach you how to hold a paint brush!   Equally, if you have dabbled in art at home and not made the progress you would like, or you would just like to remind yourself of some forgotten skills, then you will benefit from our Beginners Course.

The beginners course covers

  • basic drawing techniques using pencil
  • oil pastel painting, including blending
  • watercolour techniques
  • acrylic painting with brushes and palette knives

For a full curriculum please contact us on tracy@loveartclasses.co.uk or 01454 227116.

What is included?

Everything you will need for the duration of the course is included – all materials, that is paper, paints, brushes etc.  You are not required to bring anything with you.  We will provide you with a folder on the first day of the Beginners course which will include some basic artist’s materials which you can keep.  The classes run for 11 weeks and conclude with an exhibition of the students’ work on the 12th week.

Who can come?

Our youngest student is 19 and our oldest over 90! You’re never too old to learn and we have plenty of proof of that in our classes.  Love Art Classes are open to any adult 18 or over.

How is it taught?

The tutor is a fully qualified art teacher who brings knowledge and experience to the classes.  The tutor is supported by 1 or 2 classroom assistants who also organise the courses.  Group sizes vary but are usually between 12 -16 so each person can expect plenty of one-to-one time with the tutor.  Classes are always structured around printed handouts and supporting material to enable you to practise at home but also to refer back to after the end of the course.

Where is the class held?

Classes take place in Winterbourne Down.  Full details of the venue, including directions are sent to each student prior to the start of the course.   There is plenty of parking space and access for disabled persons.

What time do they start and finish?

Classes either run from 9.30 to 12.30 or 1.15 to 4.15.  Tea, coffee and biscuits are available when you get here and we take a break again midway through the session.

How much does it cost?

The beginners course costs £298 for 12 weeks.  A deposit of £99 is payable to secure your place and the balance is due on the first day.

When does the next Beginners Course Start?

The next beginners course starts in January 2020.  For full details of times, dates and venue, please contact us on tracy@loveartclasses.co.uk or 01454 227116.

An Introduction to Oils Course

In this 6 week course you will explore the processes, materials and techniques used in oil painting.

During the first 2 weeks you will complete a number of sampling exercises along with some experimental paintings working step by step with the tutor, including an “alla prima” still life.  You will explore the qualities of oil paint, drying times and the mediums used with it as well as learning the principle of painting “fat over lean”.

In week 3 you will look at the ways you can approach a landscape painting, including wiping out.  You will practise some of the elements of landscapes, including trees, grass and rocks and finally paint your own version of Cezanne’s “Forest” (right) or similar.

In weeks 4, 5 and 6 you will have the opportunity to practise the new techniques you have been introduced to in a landscape painting of your own composition.  You will need to supply an image/photo which will be used to complete the painting over the following 3 week period.  During these weeks you will be advised and guided individually on the options available to progress your own piece of work. In the final week you will also learn some of the latter stage processes like oiling out and varnishing to complete your introduction to oil painting.

Suitable for beginners, improvers and the more experienced artist who has not used oil paint before.

Cost £165 including all paint, paper, canvas and materials.  Each student will be also given their own brushes, brush roll and palette to keep.

We will be running this course in June 2019 for 6 weeks.  Please contact tracy@loveartclasses.co.uk or 01454 227116 for more details.
